The Buddha with dependent origination. I think it says somewhere that most of the stuff in Buddhism was from before the Buddha's time. These are things such as breath-based practices and loving kindness, among others. He had one revelation that made the entire enlightenment thing basically which is called dependent origination.*

*At least according to my meditation teacher, I believe him since he was a neuroscientist and astrophysics masters at Berkeley before he left for India though so he's got some pretty good epistemics.

It basically states that any system is only true based on another system being true. It has some really cool parallels to Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem but on a metaphysical level. Emptiness of emptiness and stuff. (On a side note I can recommend TMI + Seeing That Frees if you want to experience som radical shit there.)

Mendel's Laws seem counterfactual by about ˜30 years, based on partial re-discovery taking that much time. His experiments are technically something which someone could have done basically any time in last few thousand years, having basic maths

Aside from the rare naturally edible-when-ripe cultivar, olives are (mostly) made edible by fermenting and curing them. With salt, yes. And lye, often. Even olives fermented in water are then cured in brine. What saltless olives are you interacting with?

Edit: Also, cooking is very much processing food. It has all the mechanisms to change things and generate relevant pollutants. It changes substances drastically, and different substances differently drastically. Cooking with fire will create smoke, etc. Cooking with overheated teflon cookware will kill your birds. Mechanisms are important.

And, yes, soaking food in water, particularly for the specific purpose of cultivating micro-organisms to destroy the bad stuff in the food and generate good stuff instead, is some intense, microscopic-level processing.

Very cool! I used to think Hume was the most ahead of his time, but this seems like the same feat if not better.

I think this series might be easier for some to engage with if they imagine Carlsmith to be challenging priors around what AI minds will be like. I don't claim this is his intention.

For me, the series makes more sense read back to front - starting with some options of how to engage with the future, noting the tendency of LessWrongers to distrust god and nature, noting how that leads towards a slightly dictatorial tendency, suggesting alternative poises and finally noting that just as we can take a less controlling poise towards the future, so might AIs towards us.

More procatively I find it rasies questions in me like "am I distrustful towards AI because of the pain I felt in leaving christianity and an inability to trust that anyone might really tell me the truth or act in my best interests, despite many people doing so, much of the time". 

I would enjoy hearing lenses that others found useful to engage with this work through.

Testosterone influences brain function but not so much general IQ. It may influence to which areas your attention and thus most of your learning goes. For example, Lower testosterone increases attention to happy faces while higher to angry faces.
