[Montreal] Towards High-Assurance Advanced AI Systems by Richard Mallah

Montreal AI Ethics and Altruisme Efficace Québec are glad to bring you a talk from Richard Mallah, the director of artificial intelligence projects of the Future of Life Institute.

Title of the talk: Towards High-Assurance Advanced AI Systems

Synopsis of the talk: Advanced AI systems with high generality will present particular challenges to those hoping to maintain control of such systems. A variety of ongoing research approaches in monitoring, enforcement, and control show promise at mitigating these issues, but these can not yet provide total assurance. We’ll cover the landscape of issues and approaches at solutions.

About the speaker: Richard Mallah is Director of AI Projects at the Future of Life Institute, where he works to support the robust, safe, beneficent development of advanced artificial intelligence via metaresearch, research organization, analysis, policy engagement, and advocacy. Mr. Mallah also serves on the Executive Committee of IEEE's initiative on autonomous systems ethics, is a chair of that IEEE initiative's AGI committee, serves on the safety-critical AI & labor/economy working groups at Partnership on AI, and serves as a senior advisor to the AI initiative of The Future Society. Richard also heads AI R&D at recruiting automation firm Avrio AI, where he leads innovation in machine learning, computational linguistics, conversational agents, and knowledge representation. He is also an advisor to other startups and NGOs where he advises on AI, metaknowledge, and sustainability.

Agenda: The presentation is on December 1st, 2018. Please arrive between 17:00 and 17:15. The talk will last 50 minutes, and then we will have a 50 minutes Q&A.

Location: The event will be at the Université de Montréal, in the Pavilion Roger-Gaudry (aka: Pavilion 511A, at 2900 Boulevard Edouard-Montpetit), room G-415 (on the 4th floor). The pavilion is easily accessible from the ‘Université de Montréal’ subway station, and there will be clear indications from the entry door to the conference room.
