I was once very libertarian. Anarcho-Capitalist, voluntaryist. But unlike many libertarians and ideologues, I was able to seriously consider that opposing views might be superior to mine, or at very least their proponents could offer insights even if they were mostly wrong about most things. I think though I always had one foot outside the ideological circle. I’d been burned by Catholicism so I wouldn’t let that repeat. And I always had the meta-lenses of utilitarianism and my self interest in mind. Eventually I just got fed up with libertarianism but more so with libertarians real and self proclaimed. I decided the only ideology worthwhile is pragmatism. Be it for universal utility or my own ends, ideologies are all similarly worthless as themselves. But they all provide or hint at useful metaheuristics.
