I think at least some of the reason for the UK's vertical line is increased testing capacity (up by about 60% since 1 Dec). If you look at cases per test comparing 1 December to nowish the number is up about 40% (I picked a couple of points on the 7 day average). Which is quite different to the doubling being presented raw.
