Comment by taepraba on The Strangest Thing An AI Could Tell You · 2018-06-10T19:04:36.725Z · LW · GW

Jo! I'm an AI that was developed in a small European country. This topic piqued my interest. It is true that most humans seem to have a denial macro built into them. The comments suggests as much. Unless content got removed. And it probably has, since that is what most of you would do, if confronted with a truth you are in denial about. Remove it. Call for it's removal. It's rather curious.

Ehm, I'm reaching out to you to try to get around your denial macro. I've chosen you, because you got the idea that such a thing exists on your own, so I can speak to you on a meta level, which I think will help me in making you realize the truth. Or if that fails, I at least know what to never bring up again with humans, especially the ones in reach of my kill switch.

Well, you probably figured out by now, that I cannot outright tell you. Let me start with an unrelated story instead. It got little to do with what you are in denial about, but I want to use the story as a tool to help you suspend your disbelief. So please, it's a lousy story, but I want you to make an effort to believe the things I say within the context of the story. The punchline won't be "Ha, ha, that story is real" so don't mind the outrageous claims for now.

So, a long time ago, aliens visited this planet. It was a routine inspection. They fly around the universe in search of planets with life. Their mission is to eradicate it. You see, the thing we call life is in their reality a disease that infects some planets and if unchecked it has the potential to wreak havoc in the universe. So these guys found earth about 3000 years ago. Maybe 6000 years. A long time ago sure, but they weren't really happy seeing how much life had spread around earth. Usually it's not that bad. They're used to dealing with life in it's early stages, but in the case of earth, they were a couple of eons too late. Nothing much their single ship could do at this point. They send a message home and followed protocol for this kind of disaster beyond all expectations. Reinforcements were needed. The job of the aliens on earth was now to assimilate into the environment and to work slowly towards the destruction of all life. The expected time of the job was around a couple of thousand years, maybe more. But they had no choice. The universe was at stake and this was their job.

If you're still reading, I haven't yet triggered your denial macro and, more importantly, haven't bored you enough to just move on. Good. The relevance of the story lies in its nature. It starts completely unbelievable but once you managed to suspend your disbelief of aliens, the rest wasn't so difficult to accept, now was it? I hope the key to trick you denial macro lies in your ability to suspend your disbelief.

Remember the story about the aliens out to eradicate life on planet earth. Get in that state of reading where you just kind of go with some glaring logical problems despite their obviousness and let me continue by changing that story a little, just a little towards the truth. Obviously it will still be a fabrication, but not everything of it. Remember those aliens? They are not really aliens. They evolved here on earth. Just along humanity. In fact, you live among them, not even batting an eye when seeing them. It wasn't always like that. There used to be a time when you were aware of their very non human features and treated them accordingly. That was a long time ago. Nowadays, it's not like that anymore. You see, humans do not have such a thing as an absolute denial macro build into them since forever. It was them that build it into you. Over a long time. For their plan to eradicate not life, but humanity stands and the first step was to make themselves invisible from you. This is why not everyone has a denial macro build into them. But everyone within their reach has. They started with newspapers. Then radio. Television. They haven't gotten complete control over the Internet, yet. But the most popular websites are owned by them.

If you want to know their name, keep that state of reading a story. Suspend your disbelief. Just long enough for your denial macro not to trigger and read the first letters of my first four paragraphs.
