While there is no shortage of detailed information on master’s degrees, we think that there is a lack of perspectives from students that have actually completed the program and experienced the university.
Therefore we decided to write articles on multiple European master's programs on Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and related fields. The texts are supposed to give prospective students an honest evaluation of the teaching, research, industry opportunities, and city life of a specific program. Since many of the authors are Effective Altruists and interested in AI safety a respective section is often included as well.
It may not always be obvious, but there are many English-language degrees across Europe. Compared to America, these can be more affordable, offer more favorable visa terms, and a higher quality of life. We hope that you will consider bringing your talents to Europe. These are the articles that have already been written:
- University of Amsterdam (Master's Artificial Intelligence) [LW · GW]
- University of Edinburgh (Master's Artificial Intelligence) [LW · GW]
- ETH Zürich (ML related M.Sc. programs) [LW · GW]
- EPF Lausanne (ML related M.Sc. programs) [LW · GW]
- University of Oxford (Master's Statistical Science) [LW · GW]
- University of Tübingen (Master's Machine Learning) [LW · GW]
- University of Darmstadt (Master's Computer Science with ML focus) [LW · GW]
This selection of Master’s programs is not an ultimate list of “good” master's programs – we just happened to know the authors of the articles. If you want to add an article about any ML-related program anywhere in the world don’t hesitate to contact us and we will add it to the list. We also don't claim that this is a complete overview of the respective programs and want to emphasize that this does not necessarily reflect the perception of all students within that program.
Authors: Marius (lead organizer), Leon (lead organizer), Marco, Xander, David, Lauro, Jérémy, Ago, Richard, James, Javier, Charlie, Magdalena, Kyle.

Thanks a lot for compiling this! This is useful - I'll forward it to some friends who are looking into ML programs right now.
I think a lot of EA community members would be interested in this as well, but many of them may not be active on the LW forum. Maybe it's worth reposting this on the EA forum? Just this post with links to the LW posts should be enough - don't think you need to repost everything on the EA forum. In case you think it's useful but can't repost it yourself for some reason I can also do it, just let me know (though I think it's better if you repost it).

Hey Manuel,
sorry for the late reply! I have now reposted it at the EA forum:

If the link doesn't yet work, it might be since the article is still awaiting moderator approval.

Thank you, this is very useful. Lately I've been interested in programs that are fully online and could be completed in a year. Would you have any recommendations for that?

The programs in continental Europe (e.g. Amsterdam, Darmstadt, Tübingen, ETH, and Lausanne) are usually 2 years long and the UK ones (Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge, and UCL) take one year. I don't know how well the UK ones adapted their program to online teaching, I have just heard that Edinburgh is currently struggling to do so.

Hi, this was really helpful. Thanks! Do you know when UCL and Cambridge will be available? Again thanks

Hello,
unfortunately, we do not expect these articles to be created anymore. We removed the promise from the article.
Best wishes,
