The meetup on 1 May was another great success, and participants felt we could definitely benefit from meeting up more frequently, so we've schedule another one for next Sunday, 15 May, at 2pm in The George near London Bridge station. This is a change of venue, to mix things up and in case we get nice weather.

As always, we'll have a big picture of a paperclip on the table so you can find us; I look like this. Hope to see lots of you there. New people always welcome!

Thanks for promoting paperclips awareness at your meetups, but what was it that motivated you to use paperclip symbology to represent LessWrong meetups?

You think I'm good? I thought humans regarded paperclip maximisers as threats to their value system (paying no attention to the numerous practical uses of paperclips for humans and the enormous capital humans devote to paperclip production, of course).

If we don't believe you represent a significantly credible threat, with the ability to achieve a breakaway dominance then we can value you for the companionship or social value that you provide as we go about our various goals. This is much the same thing as what we do with each other. Most people I interact with I certainly wouldn't trust with ultimate power to get whatever they want despite my will. So you are no exception there.

Just because you would kill me and use me as material for paperclip production if it was convenient for you to do so is no reason for me to take it personally!

Humans don't always mean what we literally say, either...

You've definitely made me think more highly of paperclips.

Unlikely to attend, sadly - I appear to have been precommitted to a family pagan Beltane picnic day, no less ...
