Discussion article for the meetup : Washington, D.C.: Performance of Masculinity

WHEN: 01 February 2015 03:00:00PM (-0500)

WHERE: Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture

We will be meeting in the Kogod Courtyard of the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture (8th and F Sts or 8th and G Sts NW, go straight past the information desk from either entrance) to discuss a pair of articles about how men are taught to behave in the U.S. As usual, we will congregate between 3:00 and 3:30 and begin at 3:30.

The two articles are "The Performance of Masculinity" and "Picking and Choosing from the 'Act Like a Man Box'" by Charlie Glickman. They describe, first, a set of stereotypes that men in the United States are taught to conform to; second, some of the effects of their attempts to fit the image; and third, some ways to move beyond the "Act Like A Man" construct into patterns of behavior that are more healthy.

As always, anyone not interested in the official topic is allowed and encouraged to start side conversations.

There are no weekend service adjustments scheduled for Sunday on WMATA. The Verizon Center schedule for February 1 has a Capitals game versus the St. Louis Blues, scheduled to start at 1 p.m. - according to the Internet, a typical ice hockey game takes 3 to 3-1/2 hours.

Note: we are tentatively planning to have the Feb. 8 Fun & Games meetup at an Arlington location to facilitate electronic entertainments. Details will accompany next week's announcement.

Upcoming meetups:

  • Feb. 8: Fun & Games (bring games, play games, converse, socialize, or any combination thereof)
  • Feb. 15: Book Swap (lend books, borrow books, talk about books)
