Discussion article for the meetup : Princeton NJ Meetup

WHEN: 22 February 2014 01:00:00PM (-0500)

WHERE: Small World Coffee, 14 Witherspoon St. Princeton, NJ 08540

We're going to have the second ever Princeton NJ meetup! Even better than the first! Feel free to come whether or not you came to the first.

A bunch of people game me their emails after the first one, but we made the mistake of going handwritten, so I suspect many people never got my email. In any case, there is to be a second meetup!

Planned events:

As such, we hereby precommit to being at Small World Coffee on Witherspoon from 1pm to 3pm. I realize that people suggested better venues last time but I forgot, and the first duty of dictators is to do something when anything is better than nothing.

By the sign of the paperclip so shall ye know us.

I'm in the area and I would have loved to attend, but I just saw this posting. How many people showed up? Is another meetup being planned?

We had about 10-12 folks, and I certainly home another is on offer!

Looks like I can make it to this one!

I will make the trip again. I presume I was received somewhat well the last time...maybe I could even bring some of my own research to discuss.

I have a delightful idea for the Paranoid estimation game, and I have a scenario picked out. This should be fun. :3

Also, my instinct for a scoring rule is min(estimation/true, true/estimation) for a scale of [0, 1].

I didn't come last time, but I would like to come to this one. By sign of the paperclip you just mean that you'll have a paperclip on your table?

sign of the paperclip

Is this like Christians using the sign of the cross, viz. a symbol of ideologically significant suffering and death?

I'd never thought of it like that. I figured we were doing acausal trade - precomitting tile the universe with paperclips at very low density by absorbing it into our value system.

Ideally we will have a big picture of one. Last time we also had my copy of Godel Escher Bach.

Also, I look forward to meeting you!

Oh! A paperclip sign. That's ingenious. I didn't realize there was a meetup last time so wasn't there either, but I'm very excited for this one.

For paranoid debating, perhaps the volume of Nutella consumed by France last year, or if that seems difficult to verify, maybe the area of cornfields in Wyoming or the height of some moderately famous tall building somewhere.

Those are good ideas. But don't say them openly! Just look up the number before the meeting and bring it along so the rest of us can try and estimate it.

In the mean time, I'll try and resist thinking too much about Nutella (except insomuch as is required to eat it).

Got it, thanks. I look forward to meeting you as well!
