AB 501 is a new bill about to be introduced in the California Assembly to prevent the conversion of a non-profit like OpenAI to a for-profit. 

The bill aims to ensure that non-profits that make a certain commitment on their charters are held accountable to their commitment. In OpenAI's case, their legally-binding commitment has been to build safe AGI to benefit all of humanity rather than to unduly concentrate power in the hands of a few individuals or use AGI for private profit.

This bill aims to prevent what The Zvi has called "The greatest theft of the Millennium -- if not of all of human history."
