LW November Diplomacy

post by Vaniver · 2011-11-08T01:41:18.679Z · LW · GW · Legacy · 17 comments

The LW September Diplomacy game has come to an end. Congratulations to Prismattic, prase, and GuySrinivasan! It's time to see if we can start up another game.

If you would like to get in on a Diplomacy game with other LW users, please respond with a comment expressing your desire (between 1 and 0) to play in a game based on its turn length: 24, 36, 48, or 72 hours. (You don't need to make 0s explicit.) For example, if you can't play in a 24 hour game, could play in a 36 hour game or 72 hour game, but really want to play in a 48 hour game, then you might comment with something like "(0, .8, 1, .6)" or "24: 1; 36: .8; 72: .6". Please express your interest by midnight on 11/13 so we can get any games started on the 14th.

If November isn't a good month for you, but you'd like to make sure I make another Diplomacy thread in December, leave a comment to that effect.

A reminder to help set expectations -- the previous game, which was 48hr/turn, started around 12 September and ended 6 November. Expect a 24hr/turn game to last about a month, a 48hr/turn game to last about 2 months, and a 72hr/turn game to last about 3 months.

That's not necessarily a great metric. I have a 36 hour phase that's been going on for five months. But on the whole, I'd say that game is the exception, not the rule.

Even though I was planning on retiring from the site after my current game finishes, it will carry on for at least until December, at which point I'll have plenty of time again. And while I'm kind of burnt out on diplomacy after several bad experiences, I'm willing to play if it means the difference between a game not starting and starting. But I simply can't play anything less than 48 hour phases:

Sorry the last game was a bad experience for you.

To clarify, though, the reason I was quickly inclined to target you was not that I had figured out who you were. In 1901 you both suggested a Western Triple and offered Sweden to Russia in exchange for him turning south. Those would seem to be mutually contradictory policies (you have expand to somewhere), and since you followed through with Russia, I placed a reasonably high probability that you were planning to stab west. A Western Triple seemed unnecessary anyway, with Turkey and Russia at war. Since France was being cooperative about the channel, that made you the natural target (it took quite a long time to convince France of that, though).

How exactly did you figure out who Germany is?

I clarified it in the EOG statement I made. It was me.

... people didn't know a lot of things that are practically habit for me at this point, and that arguing for them revealed who I was ...

You have different user names on LW and WDip. I have no idea how would I determine who you are, even if I wanted and had realised that you are an experienced player.

Edit: Did you really tell England that you will throw the game to me if he stabs you? My main reason to stab him was desire to support this sort of play - precommitments, deliberate punishments and such.

There were a couple of posts on here where I linked to my WebDip profile.

And yes, I did. It was a long discussion, where he tried to get me to admit my behavior was irrational, and I replied that it made sense to play to spite, because it's essentially like cooperating int he prisoners dilemma. If everyone plays to spite, you have less cause to make people angry.

There was one point where you said something to the effect that it was a contributing factor, but I don't really have time to figure out where it was.

Is this an appropriate opportunity for someone who's never played Diplomacy but would like to try?

Sorry for the late reply! I got distracted by Skyrim.

Honestly, I'm not sure. There have been problems in the past that might be ameloriated by excluding new players- initial negotiations are really important, and so figuring out how everything works while battle lines are being drawn can be an unpleasant experience for all involved. As well, the time commitment necessary for a game is somewhat large, especially for games with longer turn lengths, and if someone backs out after a few weeks that can upset the balance of power.

What I would recommend is playing a practice game or two on WebDiplomacy, and coming back in December.

I had never played before September (I did play another game on that site to practice before the LW game started).

This month is not good, but I'd like to try this at some point.
