Meet inside The Shops at Waterloo Town Square - we will congregate in the indoor seating area next to the Your Independent Grocer with the trees sticking out in the middle of the benches (pic) at 7:00 pm for 15 minutes, and then head over to my nearby apartment's amenity room. If you've been around a few times, feel free to meet up at the front door of the apartment at 7:30 instead.
Topic
This is my third year doing earning to give, and I have a high-4 figure amount of money that will be going to some number of charitable and advocacy organizations by the end of the month.
I am still unclear about where exactly that funding should go, and I have decided to make this KWR's problem.
10% of it is allocated to local charities, but that leaves another 90%. The historical allocation of that 90% was to the Givewell Top Charities Fund, where it funds the most cost-effective opportunities in global health and development, and saves approximately one life in expectation.
This year, I am very seriously eyeing Artificial Intelligence Governance & Safety Canada (AIGS Canada) instead - they're like the one organization seriously focused on AI safety policy in Canada, they really really need funding, and they can't procure funds from any of the traditional EA sources because it's important that they're funded entirely by Canadians.
Each person who attends this meetup will get one (1) jenn 2024 donation stonk, which will in total add up to 30% of my funds, and which they can put in the Givewell or the AI bucket.
More importantly, if you argue real good, you can convince me where that other 60% goes.
If there are other folks who are still thinking through their end of year donations and thinks it sounds fun to add a percentage of their funds (and other possible destinations for donation, say an animal welfare bucket) to the pot, talk to me - I'm sure we can work something out.
