Come on out to the ACX (Astral Codex Ten) Montreal Meetup! This week, we're talking about anthropology.
Reading/Viewing Recommendations:
- Shakespeare in the bush, by Laura Bohannan.
- Notes on Nggwal, by William Buckner.
The former tells the tale of an anthropologist trying to narrate the story of Hamlet to the Tiv, and taught their interpretation the true meaning of Hamlet. It's great meta-storytelling.
The latter describes a cult that served as a fascinating coordination mechanism to unify rival groups and maintain hierarchies. It demonstrates how cultural institutions can be used for collective action and self-interest. Twisted anti-Moloch!
Please suggest topics or readings for future meetups on this form here.
Venue: L'Esplanade Tranquille, 1442 Clark, possibly second floor balcony, possibly in the outdoor area.
Date & Time: Saturday, August 31st, 2024, 1:00PM.
Please RSVP by clicking "Going" at the top of this post. It is not mandatory, but it helps with planning the event and encourages others to come.
