About:
This is a Bi-Weekly PEAR Meetup, where we talk about recent posts on EA, ACX, or LessWrong or do something else interesting. Please feel free to come, even if, like many of us, you feel awkward about it, feel that you're not the typical rationalist or effective altruist, are completely new to either community, or worry that people won't like you, etc.
Food will be provided! With most options being vegetarian or vegan. Can't wait to see you!
Topic: Heroes of Humanity
September 26th is the day Stanislav Petrov potentially averted WWIII [? · GW], and we will commemorate his heroism by discussing heroes, virtues, and how to be more like these great people. There are links below as food for thought, but no reading is required. Come, enjoy the discussion, celebrate these people, and lets celebrate our chance to live up to their heroism.
- Who: Who are the Greatest Heroes of Humanity? Scientists, CEOs, Artists, Philosophers, Politicians, War Leaders? Other Petrovs [EA · GW], Future of Life Awards
- Why: What virtues or principles makes these people Heroic? If we used these principles would we arrive at this same list of Heroes? List of Virtues [LW · GW], What is Social Impact, Radical Empathy, Virtues for Real Utilitarians [EA · GW]
- Actionables: What lessons from this discussion can we emulate in our own lives to become Everyday Heroes [EA · GW]?
"Stanislav Petrov was on duty at a particularly fraught time in history. I think we are, too. This makes it imperative to think about the kinds of decisions we might face and prepare ourselves for them. It makes it crucial that know and practice our values and principles, so that we can rely on them even when temptations are strong or matters are unclear."
