It's not just our senses. It also e.g. when you calculate how much water you need to fill a barrel -- using the assumption of the 3D space -- and you use that amount of water, it fits.
Could an observer with a different biology use a different amount of water? I suppose we would have noticed if e.g. bees were able to store more honey in their hives than seems physically possible to us.
