I would agree its both, when I talk to my team I use the words "exploration" and "experimentation" a lot and when we talk to outsiders there is definitely a performative aspect. One of the issues I've encountered, is in determining the best way transition between exploration and performance given the predilections of different audiences. I think its hard for some people to make this transition in thinking/acting and have been spending much of my time thinking about it.
