Have you ever wondered what type of personality is drawn to apocalypse stories and circulating the idea that we're certainly doomed? On the face of it their fears are valid since 99.9% of all species that have ever existed have gone extinct over the life of the planet.

But how likely is it that we're certainly going to die in our lifetimes or our children's children's lifetimes? That's where things start to go into a different direction. If they're wrong about their Armageddon speculations, then this effects how they will live and enjoy their life and also everyone else around them.

And that's why it's worth investing some time to examine this question closely.

Humans are naturally inclined to focus on negative information, a tendency known as negativity bias, which likely evolved as a survival mechanism. Our ancestors who remained hyper-vigilant to potential dangers—such as predators, food shortages, or rival groups—had a greater chance of survival, ensuring that this bias was passed down. Even in the modern world, where immediate life-threatening dangers are less frequent, the brain remains wired to prioritize threats, real or imagined. Cognitive psychologist Steven Pinker has pointed out that people feel losses more deeply than equivalent gains and that bad news tends to capture more attention than good news. This built-in psychological tendency helps explain why apocalyptic fears persist, even when they are based on speculation rather than evidence.

The rise of artificial intelligence has provided a new outlet for humanity’s ancient anxieties. While some concerns about AI are rational—particularly regarding bias, job displacement, and military applications—the more extreme narratives, where AI becomes an all-powerful entity that enslaves or exterminates humanity, seem to stem from deeper psychological forces. The question, then, is whether those drawn to AI doomsday scenarios exhibit traits associated with paranoia, obsessive fear, or catastrophic thinking. More broadly, is AI Armageddon simply a modern expression of humanity’s long history of end-times prophecies and existential dread?

However, while job displacement is a serious concern, it does not inherently equate to societal collapse. Throughout history, humans have adapted to changing economic landscapes. For most of human existence, structured “9 to 5” jobs were not the norm; societies adjusted to different forms of labor and resource allocation. Similar anxieties emerged with the development of cloning, genetic engineering, and even early computers, all of which were met with dire warnings about human extinction or loss of free will. While rational concerns about AI exist, extreme doomsday narratives often stem from psychological predispositions that incline individuals toward paranoia, obsessive fear, and worst-case scenario thinking. This closely mirrors paranoid personality disorder and persecutory delusions, conditions where individuals interpret benign or ambiguous situations as evidence of a vast conspiracy against them. Individuals with a strong need for control, or a low tolerance for uncertainty, may be particularly susceptible to anxieties about a powerful, potentially autonomous intelligence.

Similar to Cold War fears of hidden surveillance and government control, AI paranoia often revolves around the idea of an unseen, omnipresent intelligence gradually stripping humans of their autonomy. This fear is further amplified by the tendency to anthropomorphize AI, projecting human motivations—such as malice or a desire for power—onto a non-human entity. This cognitive bias fuels the narrative of AI as a consciously malevolent force, despite AI's current lack of such qualities.

For others, fear of AI is less about external threats and more about an inability to escape obsessive catastrophic thoughts. Certain AI doomers believe that AI is destined to become an all-powerful entity, either punishing or transforming humanity in ways that mirror religious eschatology. This kind of thinking is often associated with schizotypal personality disorder or paranoid schizophrenia, conditions that involve unusual belief systems and difficulty distinguishing between reality and imagination. Others frame themselves as prophets uniquely positioned to warn against the coming catastrophe, exhibiting grandiosity, which is commonly seen in bipolar mania and certain types of psychotic episodes.

Even among those without clinical conditions, existential pessimism plays a role in shaping AI fears. Many who worry about AI also express deep anxieties about climate change, economic collapse, and societal decay, suggesting that their concerns may be part of a broader worldview that sees civilization on the brink of collapse. In many ways, AI fears reflect a psychological projection—a way of externalizing personal and societal anxieties onto an emerging technology.

The Role of Media and Thought Leaders in AI Doomism

AI doomsday narratives have been significantly shaped by influential figures such as Elon Musk, Max Tegmark, and Nick Bostrom. While some of their concerns are valid, their rhetoric often leans toward alarmism, portraying AI as an existential threat comparable to nuclear weapons. Additionally, financial incentives may be fueling AI fearmongering—researchers seeking funding for AI safety initiatives may exaggerate risks, while media organizations profit from sensationalized headlines. AI doomism has even become a status marker among intellectual elites, with some embracing it as a way to distinguish themselves from mainstream optimism about technology.

Practical Strategies for Managing AI Anxiety

To effectively manage AI-related anxieties, individuals can employ several evidence-based strategies drawn from cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness practices. The first step is developing critical thinking skills to evaluate all sources of information—including those from AI researchers themselves, who may not be immune to catastrophic thinking patterns. When assessing AI developments and risks, it's important to recognize that even technical expertise doesn't prevent emotional or cognitive biases from influencing one's perspective. This awareness should extend to examining the motivations and psychological states of prominent voices in the field, while also limiting exposure to doom-scrolling content that may fuel catastrophic thinking. 

Particularly crucial is avoiding online communities and forums where apocalyptic scenarios become self-reinforcing through echo chamber effects, as these spaces can amplify anxiety and catastrophic thinking regardless of their technical sophistication. Additionally, practicing information hygiene by setting boundaries around AI-related news consumption—perhaps dedicating specific, limited time periods for staying informed—can help prevent obsessive rumination. Those experiencing significant anxiety may benefit from the "worry time" technique, where concerns about AI are contained to a scheduled 15-30 minute daily period, allowing for productive consideration of risks while preventing these thoughts from dominating daily life.

For those seeking to channel their concerns productively, engaging with AI education and development can provide a sense of agency and understanding, while maintaining awareness that technical knowledge alone doesn't guarantee emotional balance. This might involve taking online courses in AI basics, participating in AI ethics discussions, or contributing to open-source AI projects that prioritize safety and transparency. Building this technical literacy helps demystify AI technology and provides frameworks for assessing risks and opportunities, while remaining mindful that even experts can fall into patterns of catastrophic thinking. Community engagement outside of AI can provide social support, though it's important to seek out diverse perspectives and avoid groups that might reinforce doomsday narratives. These practical steps, combined with professional support when needed, can help individuals maintain a balanced perspective on AI development without succumbing to either blind optimism or paralyzing fear.

In the end, the greatest danger AI poses may not be the technology itself, but our own tendency to catastrophize the future.

Your points about the history of human fear and the negativity bias make sense to me. I certainly tend to dismiss anyone who says I “should” “worry”  -- I will consider, I will plan, I will watch out for, I will keep an eye on, I will ask advice about. I try not to worry.

But a few things stood out to me here enough that I went ahead and finally made an account instead of just lurking. First, the point about nuclear war remaining a genuine existential risk -- I'm not going to rehash all the debates here, not least of which it's not my area of expertise. Also because it wasn't the main thrust of your argument. But I do want to note that I don't think it's at all an uncontroversial claim. 

Second, societal collapse is certainly a thing that has happened. Referencing the luddites is popular because it was a technological innovation that mirrors the rise of AI, but it's not like people don't have real bad times to point to. Leaving aside little things like the 100 Years War, and just general sucky times like the Bengali Famine or whatever... the Fall of Rome was a big deal, as Bret Devereaux points out. So was 1177 BC. So was the collapse of the Mayan civilization. People can argue all they want that it wasn't a "real" collapse because the culture lived on, and not everyone died, and it was “just” a change, but although "did Rome really fall" is as popular an AP test prep question as "was Alexander really Great" I think Devereaux has the right of it when he points out that the carrying capacity of a region taking a bad enough hit leads to a lot of suffering. A huge loss of population. A lot of starving babies. 

I do think it's a mistake to conflate the likelihood of societal collapse with the likelihood of human extinction. 

But although I am not an AI doomer by any stretch of the imagination, I don't think it needs to be "human extinction level" bad for AI to really mess us up, and for people to be justified in fretting. One easy to imagine scenario that could lead to a great deal of human suffering and population collapse would be for AI to disrupt the American political system just badly enough that we stop defending international trade against piracy. If no one steps up to quickly fill the gap -- perhaps due to knock-on effects like some kind of economic collapse caused by American trade policy -- then all sorts of trade routes get less protected, less gets traded, and critical supply chains get disrupted. 

If the Pax Americana falls it could be as bad as the Pax Romana. I don't think I'm being particularly doomerist to consider these scenarios. AI doesn't even need to be particularly smart for that to happen! It merely needs to be economically disruptive, and tbh we're already there with Deep Research and such. 

Note: This is not a prediction I am just saying it's not unreasonable to imagine such a scenario impacting people.
