Hypotheses/theories (aka gears-level models [? · GW]) are not required to have an established relation to the world. A viable attitude is to develop theories as theories, improving ability to navigate them without necessarily believing, claiming, or aiming to figure out their real world truth. Theories developed this way may tend to be irrelevant, but sometimes they help with distilling useful building blocks for other things, or can be changed to become more relevant, once it becomes clear how to go about that. They can also be interesting, or interesting to develop, which is valuable in itself, regardless of any potential use!
