Update: This event will be preceded by an EA Latvia meetup at 18:00. The EA meetup will cover: 1) Planning the upcoming Effective Altruism introductory lecture at SSE Riga (scheduled for mid-December) 2) Coordinating a joint retreat with EA Estonia (proposed location: Valka) The main discussion on flight emissions will begin at 19:00 as planned.
For this meetup on Wednesday, 27 November, we'll discuss moral imperatives and impactful actions on the topic of carbon emissions generated by flights. This is inspired by one of the attendees recently grappling with the question whether utilitarianism is the right moral framework for such a topic, and what's the state of the market of technologies like direct carbon capture.
You don't need to do anything to prepare for this meetup, but if you feel like it, you might want to read/watch/listen to something on this topic that you've been meaning to get to, and share what you've learnt during the discussion. Feel free to also share with the group what has influenced your thinking on this.
Yours truly will be thinking about Scott Alexander's "Whose Utilitarianism?", Matt Yglesias' "Global Warming, Local Benefits", and hopefully some section of Hannah Ritchie's "Not the End of the World: How We Can Be the First Generation to Build a Sustainable Planet". (You don't have to read these! I'm just citing examples.)
We'll gather at MiiT from 19:00 onward. Attendance hovers around 6-9 people. Please feel free to come even if you feel awkward about it, or don't feel like you know enough about EA/ACX, even if you didn't come to the previous meetings, etc., etc.
Please RSVP, so that we know for how many people to reserve space, and please come with openness to changing your mind.
