Regarding the ships names: Impossible possible worlds would point to Heinleins: Number of the beast.
How can the superhappies not see THAT happening?
Martin
Well... would you prefer a life entirely free of pain and sorrow, having sex all day long? I would prefer to life painfree and healthy, having sex as often as i want to. Its not another job to fullfill, but a pleasant leisure activity.

Just being able to read and understand this story made reading OB worthwhile.
I"m longing for the other half!

After all, plenty of species on Earth practice cannibalism, yet we don't go on a crusade to exterminate them.
Sentience DOES make a difference. You dont frown on your cat for hunting mice, but on your dog for doing it with children.

Also, it seems a little unlikely that a third ship would arrive given that the arrival of even one alien ship was considered so surprising in the first installment.
Don't you think there might be a good reason for that which we will learn next time? My guess would be so. that has way higher standards like 'killing the unfertilized egg is murder'.

This is the point at which you invoke the MST3K Mantra.
Eliezer I sincerely hope we dont chop up your story before its even completely posted. A certain amount of Suspension of disbelieve is needed anyway.
And i sense a new inside joke coming up.
I can say thats: double-plus-baby-eating?
Martin
PS: there is no evidence for any kind of FTL actually working, scnc, argh, stop beating be with your narn bat squats aaaaaaa.-

Martin, the Baby-eaters don't remind me of the Moties. I think it's Eli's use of the Alderson Drive that reminded you of The Mote in God's Eye. @Peter
Nope :-). I thought about the vast reproduction rate both species share. And since the german title of the book and name for the Moties is different i had to look it up.
Martin
Amazing.
I wonder if they discovered libertarianism, and if they are able to think in alternative ethic systems.
Similar: how do they treat abortion, freezing of embryos and such.
Anyone see similarities to the mooties from 'The Mote in God's Eye'?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forever_War has some minor disturbing examples. Over time ppl first all turn gay (and ostracize heteros) later all become clones, and put the remaining old-humans on a nice colony while trying to ignore them.
What i could imagine as a future where i'm outer place would be: -way higher general intelligence -mankind becoming a singular, united mind while i'm kept out. -probably every future where uploads, and body switching are everyday events
Greetings,
Martin
I end up with the slightly disturbing thought that killing ppl by taking them out in an instant, and without anyone every knowing they were there does not necesarry seem to be inherently evil.
We always 'kill' part of ourself by making decisions and not developing in a different way than we do.
What if we would simulate a bunch of decisions for some recognizable amount of time and then wipe out every copy except from the one we prefer in the end?
Maybe all the ppl. in stories you make up are simulated entities too. And if you dont write the story down, or tell anyone in enough detail they die with you.
Confused,
Martin
