Maybe it's because we're now using the fiat system. The fiat system was introduced in 1971, and everything has been going downhill from there. It could be correlation or causation. But it's definitely something. This makes it more vivid:

I think a major determinant of the choice here depends on whether or not the "chooser" knows about the previous results. If you know that in the previous scenarios, people who choose only one box win, then by all means, choosing only one box is the rational decision.
If you don't have this prior information, then choosing both boxes seems more rational.
Well... in the real world, the creators are more of a mix of the heroes and villains in Atlas Shrugged. For instance, in the United States, the creators are heavily into lobbying and playing the same games the villains of Atlas Shrugged are playing.
In essence, the characterisation of the book is not realistic.
The philosophy might be different.
