VC's goal is to make money.  What is the monetary value of understanding how retinal photoreceptors (rods and cones) detect light? Basic research in general is hard to monetize but it is one of the essential drivers of the advancement of science.  How would the VC approach accelerate basic science that depends on incremental steps in diverse subfield nooks?
