Hey folks! This month I wanted to have a meetup to introduce y'all to something near to my heart: Quaker practice.

Quaker Meeting is a religious practice in which a group of people sits in silence together for an hour, occasionally speaking if they feel moved to do so. Although I identify more strongly as an aspiring rationalist, I have found that Quaker Meeting has been extremely helpful throughout my life in helping me cope with depression, and just live better in general. I'm hoping this will be helpful to you, and as my own ulterior motive, I also think it could be a particularly meaningful experience to do this with folks with whom I have more shared assumptions than most Quakers.

We'll meet up at 3pm as usual and spend the first bit hanging out, then I will explain how I personally handle the silence, introduce some prompts to help you make the most of the time, and answer any questions. Then we'll have an hour of silent contemplation. Afterward, we'll debrief, hang out, and eat, as per usual.

Hope to see you there!

Maia

I saw this too late--through one of the links Scott Alexander posted. This meetup appears to be so close to where I am. I would like to learn more about quaker practice. Please keep me posted about similar events nearby.
