You would be deceiving someone regarding the strength of your belief. You know your belief is far weaker than can be supported by your statement, and in our general understanding of language a simple statement like 'X is happening tonight' is interpreted as having a strong degree of belief. 

If you actually truly disagree with that, then it wouldn't be deception, it would be miscommunication, but then again I don't think someone who has trouble assessing approximate Bayesian belief from simple statements would be able to function in society at all.

A minor point, perhaps a nitpick: both biological systems and electronic ones depend on directed diffusion. In our bodies diffusion is often directed by chemical potentials, and in electronics it is directed by electric or vector potentials. It's the strength of the 'direction' versus the strength of the diffusion that makes the difference. (See: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffusion_current)

Except in superconductors, of course.

So the reason why the time value of money works, and it makes sense to say that we can say that the utility of $1000 today and $1050 in a year are about the same, is because of the existence of the wider financial system. In other words, this isn't necessarily true in a vacuum; however if I wanted $1050 in a year, I can invest the $1000 I have right now into 1 year treasuries. The converse is more complex; if I am guaranteed $1050 in a year I may not be able to get a loan for $1000 right now from a bank because I'm not the fed and loans to me have a higher interest rate, but perhaps I can play some tricks on the options market to do this? At any rate, I can get pretty close if I were getting an asset-backed loan, such as a mortgage.

Note that I'm not saying that actors are indifferent to which option they get, but that it is viewed with equal utility (when discounted by your cost of financing, basically).

This is a bit of a cop-out, but I would say modelling the utility of money without considering the wider world is a bit silly anyway, because money only has value due to its use as a medium of exchange and as a store of value, both of which depend on the existence of the rest of the world. The utility of money thus cannot be truly divorced from the influence of eg. finance.

Regarding overconfidence, GPT-4 is actually very very well-calibrated before RLHF post-training (see paper Fig. 8). I would not be surprised if the RLHF processes imparted other biases too, perhaps even in the human direction.

Remember, the "exception throwing" behavior involves taking the entire space of outcomes and splitting it into two things: "Normal" and "Error." If we say this is what we ought to do in the general case, that's basically saying this binary property is inherent in the structure of the universe. 

I think it works in the specific context of programming because for a lot of functions (in the functional context for simplicity), behaviours are essentially bimodal distributions. They are rather well behaved for some inputs, and completely misbehaving (according to specification) for others. In the former category you still don't have perfect performance; you could have quantisation/floating-point errors, for example, but it's a tightly clustered region of performing mostly to-spec. In the second, the results would almost never be just a little wrong; instead, you'd often just get unspecified behaviour or results that aren't even correlated to the correct one. Behaviours in between are quite rare.

I think you're also saying that when you predict that people are limited or stunted in some capacity, that we have to intervene to limit them or stunt them even more, because there is some danger in letting them operate in their original capacity. 

It's like, "Well they could be useful, if they believed what I wanted them to. But they don't, and so, it's better to prevent them from working at all."

If you were right, we'd all be hand-optimising assembly for perfect high performance in HPC. Ultimately, many people do minimal work to accomplish our task, sometimes to the detriment of the task at hand. I believe that I'm not alone in this thinking, and you'd need quite a lot of evidence to convince others. Look at the development of languages over the years, with newer languages (Rust, Julia, as examples) doing their best to leave less room for user errors and poor practices that impact both performance and security.

Yeah, I'm interested in why we need strong guarantees of correctness in some contexts but not others, especially if we have control over that aspect of the system we're building as well. If we have choice over how much the system itself cares about errors, then I can design the system to be more robust to failure if I want it to be.

This would make sense if we are all great programmers who are perfect. In practice, that's not the case, and from what I hear from others not even in FAANG. Because of that, it's probably much better to give errors that will show up loudly in testing, than to rely on programmers to always handle silent failures or warnings on their own.

I think the crux for me here is how long it takes before people notice that the belief in a wrong result causes them to receive further wrong results, null results, or reach dead-ends, and then causes them to update their wrong belief. LK-99 is the most recent instance that I have in memory (there aren't that many that I can recall, at least). 

Sometimes years or decades. See the replicability crisis in psychology that's decades in the making, and the Schron scandal that wasted years of some researchers time, just for the first two examples off the top of my head.

You have a cartoon picture of experimental science. LK-99 is quite unique in that it is easy to synthesise, and the properties being tested are easy to test. When you're on the cutting edge, this is almost by necessity not the case, because most of the time the low-hanging fruit has been picked clean. Thus, experiments are messy and difficult, and when you fail to replicate, it is sometimes very hard to tell if it is due to your failure to reproduce the conditions (eg. synthesise a pure-enough material, have a clean enough experiment, etc.) 

For a dark matter example, see DAMA/Libra. Few in the dark matter community take their result too seriously, but the attempts to reproduce this experiment has taken years and cost who knows how much, probably tens of millions.

I worked on dark matter experiments as an undergrad, and as far as I know, those experiments were built such that they were only really for testing the WIMP models, but also so that it would rule out the WIMP models if they were wrong (and it seems they did). But I don't think they were necessarily a waste.

I am a dark matter experimentalist. This is not a good analogy. The issue is not replication, but that results get built on; when that result gets overturned, a whole bunch of scaffolding collapses. Ruling out parameter space is good, you're searching for things like dark matter. Having to keep looking at old theories is quite different; what are you searching for?

I would posit that humans behave in a much more optimal manner in terms of long-run quality of life than are given credit for, excluding gambling addicts.

A lot of people who are willing to bet everything (ie. follow a linear utility function) are lower income. It is more that just that, however. Lower income people just by necessity have less savings relative to income, so losing all their savings isn't a big deal compared to work-derived income. Losing a couple months of pay sucks, but eh.

People who like to think they're being more rational by not betting the farm usually just have more to lose. If you're a professional who accrued a few million over a few decades of work, you can't make it back; you will invest prudently, with diversification across asset classes and markets; you might not even keep everything in one country.

What would the optimal utility function look like for someone who has a steady income? I would expect it to smoothly transition from a linear to a log regime, as the total winnings exceed the income per turn. Fun textbook exercise for stats undergrads, maybe I'll use it sometime.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a treatment of utility functions that deals with this problem? (The problem being "what if your utility function is such that maximizing expected utility at time t1 doesn't maximize expected utility at time t2?") It's no more a problem for Linda than for Logan, it's just less obvious for Logan given this setup.

In economics, this is considered via the time-value of money. It is considered at the market level, however, not at the level of individuals so plausibly it could have individual variances.

As a bit of metacommentary, that your main thesis (the title) is presented and viewed as a significant insight in this year (2023), and is contested significantly in the comments, is to me a sign of how insular LW is.

Democratic backsliding isn't exactly the same thing but it rhymes, and the democratic backsliding of the US has been discussed outside of LW for over half a decade at this point.

I come from science, so heavy scientific computing bias here.

I think you're largely focusing on the wrong metric. Whether exceptions should be thrown has little to do with reliability (and indeed, exceptions can be detrimental to reliability), but instead is more related to correctness. They are not always the same thing. In a scientific computing context, for example, a program can be unreliable, with memory leaks resulting in processes often being killed by the OS, but still always give correct results when a computation actually manages to finish.

If you need a strong guarantee of correctness, then this is quite important. I'm not so sure that this is always the case in machine learning, since ML models by their nature can usually train around various deficiencies; with small implementation mistakes you might just be a little confused as to why your model performs worse than expected. In aerospace, correctness needs to balanced against aeroplanes suddenly losing power, so correctness always doesn't always win. In scientific computing you might have the other extreme, where there's very little riding on your program not exiting, since you can always do a bunch of test runs before sending your code off to a HPC cluster, but if you do run this thing and base a whole bunch of science off of it it better not be ruined by little insidious bugs. I can imagine correctness mattering a lot too in crypto and security contexts, where a bug might cause information to leak and it is probably better for your program to die from internal checks than for your private key to be leaked.

I think this is definitely highly context-dependent. A scientific result that is wrong is far worse than the lack of a result at all, because this gives a false sense of confidence, allowing for research to be built on wrong results, or for large amounts of research personpower to be wasted on research ideas/directions that depend on this wrong result. False confidence can be very detrimental in many cases.

As to why general purpose languages usually involve error handling and errors: they are general purpose languages and have to cater to use cases where you do care about errors. Built-in routines fail with exceptions rather than silently so that people building mission-critical code where correctness is the most important metric can at least kinda trust every language built-in routine to return correct results if it manages to return something successfully.

How would you experimentally realise mechanism 1? It still feels like you need an additional mechanism to capture the energy, and it doesn't necessarily seems easier to experimentally realise.

With regards to 2, you don't necessarily need a thermal bath to jump states, right? You can just emit a photon or something. Even in the limit where you can fully harvest energy, thermodynamics is fully preserved. If all the energy is thermalised, you actually cannot necessarily recover Landauer's principle; my understanding is that because of thermodynamics, even if you don't thermalise all of that energy immediately and somehow harvest it, you still can't exceed Landauer's principle.

I don't buy your ~kT argument. You can make the temperature ratio arbitrarily large, and hence the energy arbitrarily small, as far as I understand your argument.

With your model, I don't understand why the energy 'generated' when swapping isn't thermalised (lost to heat). When you drop the energy of the destination state and the particle moves from your origin to your destination state, the energy 'generated' seems analogous to that from bit erasure; after all, bit erasure is moving a particle between states (50% of the time). If you have a mechanism for harvesting energy, you can always use it.

I think there's a more thermodynamically-sound ~kT argument. When you zero a bit by raising energy to cross a ~nkT barrier, if the bit is in 1, a ~nkT photon (or whatever other boson) is emitted. The carnot efficiency for harnessing this nkT energy source is (1-1/n), so only ~kT energy is lost.

This is also definition 2.1 from wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumerism):

Previously, from context, I believe it's quite clear that we're talking about definition 1 b (merriam webster) and 2.1 (wikipedia). The original post talks about how consumption is good even if frivolous, according to the OP; I believe this makes that quite clear. This is why the definitional issue of consumerism isn't quite relevant, and the definitional issue that is relevant is regarding what's frivolous. I see this a lot in internet discussion, where discussion revolves around a concept that is encapsulated by a word with multiple meanings, and a different-but-related meaning of the word keeps being brought up. It muddies the conversation. The discussion is about the concept, not the word; words are but the medium.

Regarding your more on-point criticism, I generally agree. I think the key, so to speak, is two-fold:

  1. Sometimes things just can't be equivalently-substituted not due to the goods/services, but due to the situation. That's just life.
  2. Sometimes the situation or one's mindset, both of which are malleable, are the issue. The situation of amenities being too far away is one borne of bad urban planning. 2.5 mins, your benchmark, is quite short and good, however I do notice myself going out a lot less since I came to the US (almost a decade ago) because cities are extremely not walkable, so just going to the park is a whole thing. This is something you live with, but also fight to change. Thus, in the near-term, maybe consumption beats just utilising local amenities, but that is not necessarily the case, and once again is a semi-conscious choice made by the local communities and governments and can be changed. There is also a mindset aspect, which is that many things appear significantly less enjoyable than consumption, but that is something that we can change. For example, 'sitting there with your thoughts for 15 minutes' sounds quite fine to me! I strongly believe that isn't because I'm special, it's merely because many of my family who were part of my upbringing are buddhist and hence I was taught to find value in mindfulness. In other words, I think my rule-of-thumb holds, but one needs to look deeper, not at what is substitutable, but what could be, and what it would take to change that. That sounds like a lot, but a bit of incremental change every day or week adds up very quickly, and I think relaxing consumerist (by the contextual definition here) attitudes and stepping off of the treadmill a bit makes life a lot more fulfilling.

I genuinely don't see a difference either way, except the second one takes up more space. This is because, like I said, the abstract is just a simple list of things that are covered, things they did, and things they found. You can put it in basically any format, and as long as it's a field you're familiar with so your eyes don't glaze over from the jargon and acronyms, it really doesn't make a difference.

Or, put differently, there's essentially zero cognitive load to reading something like this because it just reads like a grocery list to me.

Regarding the latter:

I think it's dumb for papers to only be legible to other specialists. Don't dumb things down for the masses obviously, but, like, do some basic readability passes so that people trying to get up-to-speed on a field have an easier time

I generally agree. The problem isn't so much that scientists aren't trying. Science communication is quite hard, and to be quite honest scientists are often not great writers simply because it takes a lot of time and training to become a good writer, and a lifetime is only 80 years. You have to recognise that scientists generally try quite hard to make papers readable, they/we are just often shitty writers and often are even non-native speakers (I am a native speaker, though of course internationally most scientists aren't). There are strong incentives to make papers readable since if they aren't readable they won't get, well, read, and you want those citations. 

The reality I think is if you have a stronger focus on good writing, you end up with a reduced focus on science, because the incentives are already aligned quite strongly for good writing.

The way the term 'consumerism' is used in your quote in the first bit does not seem to be the usual usage, so it feels a lot like equivocation to me. Consumerism is not consumption. Consumerism is not even just buying stuff that serves no purpose other than to make your life better. Consumerism is specifically buying frivolous stuff. Because of that, the first two paragraphs seems like useless window-dressing to me. No one is arguing that consumption is bad, I just ate lunch and it was delicious, now let's move on from that strawman.

With regards to frivolous consumption, there is a problem with regards to the definition of frivolous. I think the best way to think about this is to recognise that human wants and desires are quite malleable. Because of this, things that don't actually materially improve your life (eg. give you a good chance of living longer, free up significant portions of time, etc.) and instead are purchased primarily because buying the item gives a burst of pleasure, are fundamentally useless. Sure, having this item makes you happier, but so does just about any action that you can convince yourself is valuable. An example of such an item might be a fancy branded mechanical keyboard with just the right switches. There is no fundamental reason why such a keyboard would make me happier than, say, spending some quality time with my family, even though personally I do desire such items. The assumption in your quote is that frivolous purchases still provide conveniences, but I would argue many items really really don't! Buying a new iPhone every time your contract expires does not provide any new convenience over, say, a battery swap. You might be able to have fun playing with new games, or features, but I had way more fun playing PS2 games with my friends decades ago than I have on any modern phone game; it really doesn't matter. Neither do mechanical keyboards; if anything, the longer travel distance might worsen RSIs.

It is also important to recognise that due to the hedonic treadmill, you don't derive long-term enjoyment from buying things. After a while you get used to it; losing the item would bring you sadness, but the continued existence of the item no longer brings joy. Because of that, buying a durable item (eg. fancy keyboard) is actually far more similar to activities that bring transient enjoyment (hanging out with people) than one might imagine.

Now, if there are no negative externalities, none of this would matter. After all, the universe is cold and uncaring, why not have some fun, etc. However, there are. I mean, there's basically the whole climate thing going on, and the whole microplastics things, and producing more stuff has costs to society as a whole. However, even if we ignore that, if we zoom out a bit, there are costs. Society as a whole as some maximum level of productivity given by our total amount of technology, labour and human capital, land, and actual capital (eg. accumulated machinery, etc.). The more of this productivity is directed towards producing useless shit, the less we can direct towards actually making the world better, advancing technology, helping people, etc. Because of this, I strongly believe that if there is any consumption that provides utility that can be equivalently substituted by non-consumption, that consumption is a net negative for society. This is not to say I am a magical person of magical will-power. I buy shit that's useless. However, I recognise that I bought a thing that brings be less joy and wonder than a walk through the park after a spring shower, and maybe I should remind myself to do that more often.

Papers typically have ginormous abstracts that should actually broken into multiple paragraphs. 

 

I suspect you think this because papers are generally written for a specialist audience in mind. I skim many abstracts in my field a day to keep up to date with literature, and I think they're quite readable even though many are a couple hundred words long. This is because generally speaking authors are just matter-of-factly saying what they did and what they found; if you don't get tripped up on jargon there's really nothing difficult to comprehend. If anything, your 69 word version reads more like a typical abstract I see day-to-day than the more verbose version you had earlier; way too much filler to be a good abstract. For example, sentences like these ones rarely show up in abstracts:

This post summarizes and reviews the key claims of said agenda, its relationship to prior work, as well as its results to date. Our hope is to make it easier for newcomers to get up to speed on natural abstractions, as well as to spur a discussion about future research priorities.

Or, put more bluntly, papers really just aren't textbooks or press articles. They are written to be understandable to specialists in the field, and maybe adjacent fields (a PRL paper would be written to address all physicists, for example), but there's simply no effort made towards making them easy to understand for others. It's really just 'We designed A. It works like this. We describe A and associated subsystems in detail in the paper. We characterise A by doing B, C, D, and E. The performance agrees with simulation." There are bad abstracts everywhere, of course, but I disagree that they're the norm. Many abstracts are quite reasonable, and effectively just say 'Here's what we did, and here's what we found'.

Just to be clear, many academics are also educators. So when I say productive, I generally mean productive for both sides; after all, I have many discussions that are hopefully productive but largely in a one-sided way. It's called class.

I don't think it's been that productive to me, because I haven't learnt anything new or gained a new perspective. Outreach and education do not necessarily represent productive discussion in that sense; I consider the former a duty and the latter a job. There are often surprises and productive discussions, especially when teaching, but that's because many undergraduate students effectively have a graduate-level understanding, especially in the latter years of their undergraduate degree. Still, it is not the norm.

So really, I don't think it's true that philosophical discussion in general is discouraged. I think it's more fair to say that philosophical discussion is discouraged in online forums where laypeople and physicists both inhabit. There's nothing particularly deep about that. Physicists are just often a little tired of the kind of philosophical thought that typically comes to laymen, both because typically it is very hard to discuss anything with people who are not used to the precision of language required for scientific discussion, and because so much ink has been spilled over the centuries that most thoughts are not novel, especially when someone does not have a good understanding of the literature. While it might be reasonable to think that it's good as long as it is productive for one side, I think it's important to just realise that we're people too, and I'm not going to be in patient outreach mode 100% of the time on the internet (or even 50%); most of the time I just wish that the few places I can discuss physics with random people aren't choked up by largely unoriginal philosophy. There's also the fact that I briefly mentioned, which is that laypeople who visit sciencey places like r/physics (or LW) often really really really really like talking about metaphysics; allowing that would just mean it's impossible to wade through all the philosophy to find any empirical physics at all.

Basically, I still disagree with this statement:

that the non-philosophical physicists are biased against philosophical discussions among philosophical physicists

I have no encountered such bias, at least towards me, and I am one hell of a rambler. I'm also not particularly senior or anything, so it's not like people are deferring to me or something.

Your belief that there are 'philosophical' and 'shut-up-and-calculate' physicists generally agrees with my anecdotal experience. However, that's the thing: there are many physicists who are happy to think about philosophy. I think I fall into that camp. Really strange to think that there are philosophical physicists, and yet think that physicists don't engage in philosophical discussion. Do you think we're being muzzled? I'm quite happy with my freedom of speech, just to make this point clear.

I don't want to just say your post is wrong, so here's be being more specific:

I don't think many physicists have strong opinions on what's 'more significant'. I'd say working physicists obviously have strong opinions on what they can actually work on, though. Just because people don't work on something doesn't mean it's not 'significant', it might merely mean our current understanding is so far away that there's no point.

Indeed, quantum fundamentals is a rather active field, both experimentally and theoretically.

For example, there is a subset of the quantum physics community who refer to themselves as the “shut up and calculate” faction. They dissuade people from asking “why” certain phenomena occur.

None of my colleagues have dissuaded me before. 

The theocrats also predominate among the moderators of the physics subreddits, and they promptly censor/delete any post which they deem to be “speculation,” “philosophical,” “unproven” or a “self-idea.” “Dangerous” ideas include string theory, multiverse theories, and any thoughts which don’t conform to universe-centrism. 

There's a difference between speculation on public forums by laymen and speculation by, say, me. That sounds elitist, but stick with me. Firstly, people love to speculate. If online forums, such as on reddit, didn't discourage it, most posts would be that. Maybe you like that, but that's not very conducive for a general sub like r/physics. The discussion would just not really be a reflection of Physics as is done in the real world at all! Second, even just a few years in, people get a little sick of their uber driver picking them up from the Physics dept building and talking their ear off about their thoughts regarding quantum consciousness.

Most importantly, though, most of these discussions with laymen are just unproductive. Here on LW people like to complain about laymen not even understanding AI safety basics, and coming up with stupid suggestions that have been discussed to death in the 2000s. How do you think physicists feel about ideas that have been discussed to death in the 1900s, or things that are just Not Even Wrong?

It seems it would be better for science if theocrats were to simply ignore the ideas with which they disagree, rather than hide those ideas from the eyes of others.

That just doesn't work, unless your suggestion is for professional physicists to never have online forums where they can discuss things but are also allowed to mix with laymen. 

Furthermore, it seems like the “no questions” mantra is antithetical to science. 

That's the thing; controversial topics are quite happily discussed among physicists. Reddit or LW is just not where science generally happens.

Finally as a closing thought, one needs to remember that science is defined by empiricism. At the end of the day, the strict focus on falsification is just contrary to how science works in real life; most physicists I know think in effectively Bayesian terms regarding model probabilities. However, that is still empiricism, just relaxed to be okay with induction. Many physicists do enjoy pure philosophy, but we don't pretend that they're physics. That's one of your biggest mistakes. You think that these things should be physics because they concern the natural world, and physicists refuse to accept such discussions. In reality, my buddies and I often chat about the fundamental nature of reality over a cold pint; we just don't call it physics. 

In addition, physicists who deal with the fundamental stuff (eg. me, but I'm not a theorist) are only a minority. The condensed matter community, for example, is likely significantly larger than the particle physics or cosmology communities. Then there's AMO, quantum sensing (overlaps with AMO), etc...and these fields largely (not not completely, eg. quantum gravitation experiments) have little to do with metaphysics. This makes the point about online forums even more acute. Without harsh moderation, most physicists, and most physics, would simply be drowned out by the cacophony of speculation and fundamental physics.

 

Edit: I looked at your books too, though only the amazon preview. Congrats on the books, writing a few hundred pages is always an accomplishment. I can't say I see any expertise beyond a pop-sci level, though. This is not a criticism, and I hope you don't take it as such; these are pop-sci books, and don't require more expertise than, well, a pop-sci level of expertise. They can be excellent books in their own right, I do not have the expertise to judge science communication. However, I'm not sure how to convey this without sounding like an elitist asshole, but I've never had productive discussions about physics with people who don't at least have a graduate-level understanding of physics before. Note here that I am not referring to a PhD (or MSc); it is likely possible for someone who has more self-discipline than I'll ever have to self-learn a lot of physics. However, there is a ton of material to learn before one can even be useful in a discussion. For example, scientific language is a bit of an argot, due to both tradition and necessity; in regular speech, equivocation is so common that people don't even notice it most of the time, but such imprecise language slows discussion down a huge amount with technical subjects. Equivocation is one of the biggest issues I face when discussing science with laymen.

I do suspect that as societies age more, the effective cost of childcare might drop drastically. "It takes a village" is really difficult during a population explosion. However, old people are usually not only experienced at childcare, but often even provide it as a free service to family because they enjoy it! Two grandparents just can't take care of all of the kids of their own 4 children, if they all produce 2 more. I was partially (~40%) brought up by my grandparents; this is somewhat of an anomaly because my grandparents' family was tiny for the baby boom era, but this is rapidly becoming possible again as the number of retirees increase and the number of children decrease. However, these days, I am anecdotally seeing more grandparent babysitters, as many of my friends have zero or one siblings, meaning their children don't have to share grandparent time with many other branches of the family. Many of us grew up in a time where we have more cousins and siblings than grandparents; I think this will change, and when this changes, that will confer a boost to fertility.

There's a second effect I hypothesise too. We can see that many of the very low fertility countries are also countries with a strong focus on education and human capital. (Japan, Korea, Singapore, Finland, for example). I posit that a strong focus on human capital decreases fertility by raising the marginal cost per child. In both above and here, I use cost to refer to not just monetary cost, but also all other costs (career opportunity costs because you need to help your child with education, etc.). In my experience in Singapore, parents are highly involved in children's education, and among the Koreans I know this seems to be the norm too. I think having a highly populous society increases this push for human capital. This is because there are less resources (natural resources, actual capital, etc.) per capita. One thus needs more human capital to attain affluence. However, with a sufficiently aged population, while productivity and hence living standards might drop (or otherwise grow less slowly than technology would allow for in the absence of demographic changes), labour becomes more valuable.

 

In short, I think the fertility decrease is due to two factors: a "shadow" from our population boom making childcare more expensive and in-family childcare less common than would be expected in a steady-state system, and population growth outstripping growth in accumulated capital and resources making the labour market more competitive. Both of these should be self correcting.

Quantum randomness is fundamentally random, unless you believe in hidden-variable theories, superdeterminism, or something something Bell's theorem loopholes.

This is true for both shut-up-and-calculate QM and for MWI; the difference is whether the universe is random, or whether the "branch" that your subjective experience ends up on is random. In the latter MWI case, I think any observer looking at the two clones Earths would still see divergence, because an observer is unable to somehow probe the universal wavefunction and see the deterministic evolution of wavefunctions or whatever anyway.

There's a separate question of whether you can "see" this randomness, and thus whether quantum randomness even matters. The answer is really yes. As one example, mutations can be caused by cosmic rays. Maybe an extremely fit genotype came to be because of a cosmic ray, that happened to come in the right direction due to the randomness from pion decay in the upper atmosphere. That would be a major macroscopic deviation that would happen over generations. There are probably many other such things. 

Also, quantum theory forbids wavefunction clones, so the initial state of your two Earths would already be different (different different or different Everettian branches). This is my understanding of the no-cloning theorem, at least.

India and China can actually make credible threads that they just let their own companies break patents if Big Pharma doesn't sell them drugs at prices they consider reasonable. 

When it comes to reducing prices paid, if you look at the UK for example, they have politicians who care about the NHI budget being manageable. If drugs don't provide enough benefits for the price they cost they don't approve them, so there's pressure to name reasonable prices.

Sure, but that doesn't address why you think researchers in these countries would be so affected by American pharma that there aren't enough people to do convincing studies that would affect American bottom lines. In other words, still the same thing: why you think there is evidence of a worldwide conspiracy.

Ghost authorship isn't just putting a name on a paper to which you little contributed but also about the real authors not appearing on the paper. Ghostwriters are people who wrote something and don't appear on the author list. 

If a student goes to upwork, lets someone write him an essay, does a few minor changes, and then turns it in under their own name while leaving out the real author of the paper that's seen as plagiarism by every academic department out there. 

I don't think that's right. I think it would be considered academic dishonesty but not plagiarism per se, because for students the expectation for graded work is that they are submitting their own work (or work with fellow students in the same class, for some classes and types of work). However, for papers, works are supposed to be collaborative, so just having additional contributors isn't itself a problem. The problem instead is that all authors are listed and all authors contributed. In terms of industry research, disclosure of industry links is another problem.

I looked up a few articles on the subject, and it really doesn't seem like ghostwriting is plagiarism (though it depends on the definition and who you ask!), but it certainly can violate ethical codes or journal guidelines:

It's interesting that you assume I'm talking about poorer countries. What about developed Asia? They have a strong medical research corp, and yet they are not home to companies that made covid-19 medication. Even in Europe, many countries are not host to relevant companies. You do realise that drug prices are much lower in the rest of the developed world compared to the US, right? I am not talking about 'poorer countries', I am talking about most of the developed world outside of the US, where there are more tightly regulated healthcare sectors, and where the government isn't merely the tail trying to wag the proverbial dog.

Also, your evidence is not evidence of a worldwide conspiracy. Everything you've mentioned is essentially America-centric.

Plagiarism is generally considered an academic crime and yet plenty of researchers are willing to put their names on papers written by Big Pharma that they themselves did not write.

I'm starting to feel like you really don't know much about how these things work. People put their names on papers they don't write all the time. Authorship of a paper is an attribution of scientific work, but not necessarily words on paper. In many cases, even minor scientific contribution can mean authorship. This is why in physics author lists can stretch to the thousands. At any rate, improper authorship isn't the same 'academic crime' as plagiarism at all. The problem isn't plagiarism, it is non-disclosure (of industry links) and improper authorship. It's also important to note that this is not some kind of unique insight. Your model of medical research could be true, if only countries with extensive investments in pharmaceuticals do clinical trials, all funding is controlled by "Big Pharma", and scientists are highly corruptible. Even then, it only takes one maverick research hospital to show the existence of a strong effect, if there is one. Thus, at best, you can argue that there's a weak effect which may or may not be beneficial compared to side-effects.

I don't think your view seems correct anyway. Many clinical trials, including those that found no significant effect, came from countries that seem relatively unlikely to be controlled by American and European pharmaceutical companies. A lot of them are also funded by government sources, and etc. Perhaps your view is correct in the US; however, much of the rest of the world doesn't suffer from extreme medication prices. If "Big Pharma" can't even effect that change, which they are much more likely to be able to due to market power and also affects their bottom line more directly, why would we still think there are tentacles throughout research all over the world? 

At the end of the day, your worldview involves so much worldbuilding and imagination that it's likely highly penalised by Occam's razor considerations (or whatever quantitative version of your choice) that you'd need a lot of evidence to justify it. Just "saying things" isn't evidence of a worldwide conspiracy. And if there's no worldwide conspiracy, there's really nothing to your argument, since there are clinical trials from all over the world saying similar things.

As someone who has been forced to use flat bottom pans due to the prevalence of electric coils in rental places in the US, I can say that most stir fries do benefit from a wok, and stir-fries are the bread-and-butter of homestyle cooking in many east and southeast asian cuisines.

It's not a make-it-or-break-it situation. The closer you get, the better; a carbon steel pan is often halfway there. A key issue in my experience is that woks allow for oil to pool even with very little oil, and stir-frying is often a hybrid sautee/shallow-fry. If you wanted to do that with a flat pan you need a metric ton of oil, which is just not good for the dish. No-one wants food to come with a pool of oil. Heat transfer is often not as important as Western cookbooks focused on wok recipes suggest, primarily because homestyle cooking is often not focused on the high heat "wok-hei" type stuff that Western cookbooks focus on. It's likely just because people get exposed to wok cooking via restaurants in the West.

Basically, I don't think it's an edge case at all. There are also just various things that make me sad when I don't have a proper wok, such as the inability to make perfectly round sunny-side-up eggs that are also perfectly browned around the edges. This is because eggs also "pool" in a wok, of course, and unlike the egg rings, a wok is quite hot all the way round. I think another crucial aspect is that many cultures care about food more than I've seen in the US. (just people I personally know. Not commenting on the US in general, since I am explicitly not American and I am not an expert on American culture.) Add that to the fact that people living in a foreign country are inherently more defensive about their culture, and I think it really explains why woks are a bit of a sticking point. People already have to try to keep their own culture alive, things like that make it harder.

Calling woks 'exotic forms of cooking' when they're (likely, given the Asian American pop.) the primary daily cooking vessel for millions of Americans, and probably a good fraction of the world population, is really a good reflection of how white-urban-American LW is.

For the record, I think everyone should switch to induction woks. Methane leaks are pretty bad for the climate. I certainly am switching to an induction wok. Still, weird to dismiss the main cooking tool of a huge groups of people as 'exotic'.

That's a strange conclusion to draw. The simple climate models basically has a "radiative forcing term"; that was well estimated even in the first IPCC reports in the late 80s. The problem is that "well-estimated" means to ~50%, if I remember correctly. More complex models are primarily concerned with the problem of figuring out the second decimal place of the radiative forcing and whether it has any temperature dependence or tipping points. These are important questions! In simple terms, the question is just whether the simple model shown breaks down at some point.

I don't think actually reading the literature should convince anyone otherwise, the worst charge you could levy is one regarding science communication. I mean, I don't think anyone from the climate community would dispute the fact that the early IPCC reports, which were made before we had access to fancy computers, did actually predict the climate of the 21st century so far remarkably well: https://www.science.org/cms/asset/a4c343d8-e46a-4699-9afc-983fea62c745/pap.pdf

The other aspect is that the ~50% (ballpark) uncertainty in the forcing, back then, allows for good near-term projections but the projections diverge after more than a couple decades, and we really want to have a better handle on things with a longer time horizon.

Finally, you can see that sea-level projections weren't quite as good. Detailed modelling is a bit more important there.

One problem with trusting the experts is that there doesn't seem to really be experts at the question of how the knowledge gained in clinical trials translates into predicting treatment outcomes for patients. 

I mean, kinda? But at the same time, translation of clinical trials into patient outcomes is something that the medical community actively studies and thinks about from time to time, so it's really not like people are standing still on this. If you ask the kind of people who do those trials simple questions like "Does blinding as it's commonly done mean that the patients don't know whether they are taking the placebo or not?" You likely get a lot of them falsely answering that it means that because they are ignorant of the literature that found that if you ask patients they frequently have some knowledge. 

You could probably find some specific examples of common misconceptions in most fields. However, I'd really wager that most people outside the fields have more. That is in addition to the breadth of exposure to studies, which is a point you completely ignored. Ultimately, even if you can integrate evidence perfectly, bayesian thinking relies on 2 things: interpreting evidence correctly, and having a lot of evidence. We disagree regarding interpreting evidence correctly. Sure, maybe you think you can do as well as the average medical researcher; I still think that is pretty bad advice in general. I don't think most people will. In addition, I doubt people outside of a field would consider the same breadth of evidence as someone in the field, simply because in my experience just reading up enough to keep up to date, attending talks, conferences, etc. ends up being half of a full-time job.

This is not an argument against bayesian thinking, obviously. This is me saying if someone has integrated evidence for you, you should evaluate that evidence with a reasonable prior regarding how trustworthy that person is, and one should also try to be objective regarding their own abilities outside of their field. A reasonable prior is to not think of oneself as exceptional, and look at how often people venture outside of their fields of expertise fall flat on their face.

But, while this might not be an indication of an error, it sure is a reason to worry. Because if each new alignment researcher pursues some new pathway, and can be sped up a little but not a ton by research-partners and operational support, then no matter how many new alignment visionaries we find, we aren't much decreasing the amount of time it takes to find a solution.

 

I'm not really convinced by this! I think a way to model this would be to imagine the "key" researchers as directed MCMC agents exploring the possible solution space. Maybe something like HMC, their intuition is modelled by the fact that they have a hamiltonian to guide them instead of being random-walk MCMC. Even then, having multiple agents would allow for the relevant minima to be explored much more quickly.

 

Taking this analogy further, there is a maximum number of agents beyond which you won't be mapping out the space more quickly. This is because chains need some minimum length for burn-in, to discard correlated samples, etc. In the research world, I think it just means people take a while to get their ideas somewhere useful, and subsequent work tends to be evolutionary instead of revolutionary over short time-scales; only over long time-scales does work seem revolutionary. The question then is this: are we in the sparse few-agents regime, or in the crowded many-agents regime? This isn't my field, but if I were to hazard a guess as an outsider, I'd say it sure feels like the former. In the latter, I'd imagine most people, even extremely productive researchers, would routinely find their ideas to have already been looked at before. It feels like that in my field, but I don't think I am a visionary my ideas are likely more "random-walk" than "hamiltonian".

For context, Richard is a physicist who wasn't convinced by the climate change narrative, but actually put his money where his mouth is and decided to take on the work needed to prove his suspicions right. However, his work actually ended up convincing himself instead, as his worries about the statistical procedures and data selection actually ended up having little effect on the measured trend. He says (and I quote):

When we began our study, we felt that skeptics had raised legitimate issues, and we didn't know what we'd find. Our results turned out to be close to those published by prior groups. We think that means that those groups had truly been very careful in their work, despite their inability to convince some skeptics of that. They managed to avoid bias in their data selection, homogenization and other corrections.

I think the Ivermectin debacle actually is a good demonstration for why people should just trust the 'experts' more often than not. Disclaimer of sorts: I am part of what people would call the scientific establishment too, though junior to Scott I think (hard to evaluate different fields and structures). However, I tend to apply this rule to myself as well. I do not think I have particular expertise outside of my fields, and I tend to trust scientific consensus as much as I can if it is not a matter I can have a professional opinion on.

As far as I can tell, the ivermectin debate is largely settled by this study: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2790173

It seems quite reasonable that ivermectin doesn't do much for covid-19, but kills the intestinal worms (strongyloidiasis) it is typically prescribed for. Oh, and the prevalence in some countries exceeds 15%, and those worms can cause deadly hyperinfection when used with corticosteroid that are also used to manage covid-19. This would explain why in developed countries ivermectin trials appear to do essentially nothing, and why it shouldn't be used as a first-line covid-19 treatment, but instead can be used as preventative medication against worms before use of immunosuppressive medication if there is a significant risk of strongyloidiasis.

There was also a large trial in the US, with about as many patients as the original meta-studied has, but in a single double-blinded randomised placebo-controlled trial. It didn't find a significant effect: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2797483

The key here is this: there is an resolution to this debacle, but it ultimately still came from experts in the field! I think everyone has significant cognitive biases, me included. One typical bias I've seen on LW and many other haunts of rationality and EA-types is that humans are lean mean bayesian machines. I know I am not, and I'm a scientist so I'd like to think I put a lot of effort into integrating evidence objectively. Even then, I find it extremely difficult to do comprehensive reviews of all available information outside of my field of study. Ultimately, there is just so much information out there, and the tools to evaluate which papers are good and which are bad are very domain-specific. I have a pretty decent stats background, I think; I actually do statistics in my field day to day. Yet I just don't know how to evaluate medical papers at all beyond the basics of sample size, because of all the field-specific jargon especially surrounding metastudies. Even for the large trial I linked, I figure it is good because experts in the field said so.

In short, we would all like to believe the simple picture of our brains taking evidence in and doing bayesian inference. However, to be exposed to all the information that you need to be to get a good picture of a field includes understanding all the jargon, being up to date on past studies and trends, understanding differences in statistical procedure between fields, understanding the major issues that could plague studies typical to the field, etc., in addition to just the evidence. This is because both synthesising "evidence" into actual bayesian evidence and being so steeped in the literature that one can have a birds' eye view essentially require one to be an expert in the field.
