• Paul Meehl, Philosophical Psychology 1989 course lectures, "deep introduction to 20c philosophy of science, using psychology rather than physics as the model science -- because it's harder!" (via @Jonathan Stray [LW · GW])
  • "Meehl was a philosopher of science, a statistician, and a lifelong clinical psychologist. He wrote a book showing that statistical prediction usually beats clinical judgement in 1954, and a paper on the replication crisis in psychology in 1978.   • Me: I was hesitant to add a lecture series to this list at first. I changed my mind after listening to the first video, where Meehl provides interesting details (gossip, almost) about the life of an academic and the various personalities of his successful academic peers.

A::B Prompting Challenge: $10k to prove me wrong! 

# CHALLENGE Develop an AI prompt that solves random 12-token instances of the A::B problem (defined in the quoted tweet), with 90%+ success rate. 

# RULES 1. The AI will be given a random instance, inside a <problem/> tag. 2. The AI must end its answer with the correct <solution/>. 3. The AI can use up to 32K tokens to work on the problem. 4. You can choose any public model. 5. Any prompting technique is allowed. 6. Keep it fun! No toxicity, spam or harassment.

Survival vs self-expression: Survival values prioritize security over liberty. Those with survival values tend to be more homophobic, uninterested in political action, distrustful of outsiders, and less happy. As people transition from industrial to knowledge societies, their sense of agency increases and they move towards self-expression values. 

To me, the empiric status of that claim feels quite unclear. Is that your personal opinion? Is it a general pattern for which there's existing data?

Way back in the halcyon days of 2005, a company called Cenqua had an April Fools' Day announcement for a product called Commentator: an AI tool which would comment your code (with, um, adjustable settings for usefulness). I'm wondering if (1) anybody can find an archived version of the page (the original seems to be gone), and (2) if there's now a clear market leader for that particular product niche, but for real.

Most companies don't threaten their employees with physical violence. According to another Boeing whistleblower Sam Salehpour, that seems to happen at Boeing.

Being a defense contractor, I would expect Boeing corporate to have better relationships with the kind of people you would hire for such a task than corporations. 

Poisoning someone with MRSA infection seems possible but if that's what happened it's capabilities that are not easily available. If such a thing would happen in another case, people would likely speak about nation-state capabilities.
