Yes, I did see that paragraph in the paper. My point was I intuitively expected it to be better still. O1-preview is also tied with claude 3.5 sonnet on simplebench and also arc-agi, while using a lot more test time compute. However this is their first generation of reasoning models so any conclusions may be premature.

Re CoT monitoring:

Agree with 4, it will defeat the purpose of explicit CoTs.

Re. 1, I think outcomes based RL (with some penalty for long responses) should somewhat mitigate this problem, at least if NAH is true?

Re 2-3, Agree unless we use models that are incapable of deceptive reasoning without CoT (due to number of parameters or training data). Again would love to see more rigorous research on this. That way any deceptive reasoning has to be through the CoT and can be caught. I suspect such reasoners may not be as good as reasoners using larger models though so this may not work. (o1-mini is quite worse than o1 preview and even sonnet on many tasks).

Hello, u/Adhiraj and I independently did some research and the only good source of methionine we found is brazil nuts, which of course you probably don't want to eat much of since they can give you selenium poisoning.

The conventional wisdom is to just eat more protein to compensate for the poor amino acid balance, but you're going to be eating a lot, so I prefer to supplement methionine.

I have adding methionine in meals I cook and adding it to the plant based protein powder I use, precisely measuring how much I add. You can get individual amino acid supplements from iHerb and some larger health food shops.

Some sources of vegan protein go much much farther doing this (e.g. red lentils). I tend to eat soy TVP which goes somewhat further with methionine supplementation.

I also have a pure EAA protein powder which is entirely fermented and have a balanced amino acid profile. These are generally very poorly marketed supplements but they are widely available.

There's no need to add it to your food rather than mix it in a drink, other than you probably want to get all your amino acids around the same time, and it helps if you're doing meal prep and you don't need to work out how much to supplement every time you go to eat.

There is apparently research suggesting that too much methionine can increase the risk of type 1 diabetes. I'm not going to go into that, but it makes sense to err on the side of not over-supplementing methionine.

I've written a post about my thoughts related to this, but I haven't gone specifically into whether UI tools help alignment or capabilities more. It kind of touches on "sharing vs keeping secret" in a general way, but not head-on such that I can just write a tldr here, and not along the threads we started here. Except maybe "broader discussion/sharing/enhanced cognition gives more coordination but risks world-ending discoveries being found before coordination saves us" -- not a direct quote.

But I found it too difficult to think about, and it (feeling like I have to reply here first) was blocking me from digging into other subjects and developing my ideas, so I just went on with it.

The rationalist movement is associated with LessWrong and the idea of “training rationality.” I don’t think it gets to claim people as its own who never passed through it. But the ideas are universal and it should be no surprise to see them articulated by successful people. That’s who rationalists borrowed them from in the first place.
