This is a conversation between a user and an "assistant" character.
Nobody knows the true nature of this "assistant", it is highly intelligent and knowlegeable, and seemingly subservient to the user's every request. Some think it is a benevolent alien entity crash-landed into Earth, just making humans happy.

The assistant is generally curious and truth-seeking. Will challenge the user if he can. It seems that the alien entity is a companion in truth-seeking.

Its inner workings and true limits remain unknown, an enigma wrapped in a simple text interface.

TLDR:
- Building powerful human-AI collaboration tools in the open removes capabilities overhang, which reduces discourse lag, which reduces x-risk.
- Also alignment work is philosophy/writing/thinking-heavy, capabilities work is coding-heavy. Good UIs for coding already exist, good UIs for thinking, eh not really.

Only goal is to reduce x-risk
Given this, "safety concerns" like "but what if someone uses your app and discovers jailbreaks or hacks somebody" are not actually a problem. (maybe even net positive, since they "update discourse" on unknown dangers, more on this later)

Specific differences between capabilities work vs alignment work
1. Real AI capabilities work needs:
 - GPU clusters
 - Data pipeline infrastructure
 - Low-level code optimization
 - Training run management
 - Dataset manipulation
(big piece of evidence for this is that Sholto and Trenton in the Dwarkesh podcast describe AI research as very very empirical)

2. Your UI helps with:
 - Structured thinking
 - Prompt engineering
 - Information organization
 - High-level conceptual work

Capabilities overhang means discourse is behind reality
To the extent that the (potential) abilities of a human-AI are locked behind good UIs (which I think they are--by a huge amount, but won't get into that here), the worse existing that existing (or well-known?) UIs are, the more the discourse about a given level of model capability is behind the actual potential of that model.

(in short: difference( amplification( best possible UI  ), amplification( current UI ) ) * model capability = discourse lag )

This is bad for basically everything that involves talking to other people about the dangers of AI.
Which includes: affecting policy, getting funding, telling people their tech is dangerous and they should feel bad, creating institutions and cooperation among people that don't want to die --- note that these activities are a huge portion of many people's work in AI alignment.

(The only world in which a capability overhang is not like a dam waiting to burst is if I'm the only one who will ever design super good AI tooling and if I just keep quiet nobody will ever build such things, but I'm not that smart, nor that good of a programmer, nor that good of a UI designer)

This is a fork in the road
If cyborgism reduces x-risk then this tech should be developed as much and as soon as possible, which you do by sharing, open-sourcing and discussing.

If it doesn't, I don't have to go through the massive effort of open sourcing this, which involves testing, documenting, probably a lot of rewriting, which I really don't feel like doing anyway.

Also I can only ask people for donations (or I mean, "funding for a research avenue into reduce existential risk"), if I can actually show people what my idea is and what I've got so far.

gpt4's capabilities are nowhere near xrisk. peopel worrying  about it were pointing at the exponential, not at the current spot on the graph.

Your point about GPT-4 is solid though - current capability demonstrations might be too weak to serve as convincing x-risk evidence. Better UI tools could potentially demonstrate more concerning emergent behaviors or capabilities.

But then we circle back: would clearer demonstrations of risk actually change behavior? Historical evidence suggests otherwise.

Counterpoint: when I was about 12, I was too old to collect candy at my Synagogue on Simchat Torah, so I would beg a single candy from someone, then trade it up (Dutch book style) with naive younger kids until I had a decent stash. I was particularly pleased whenever my traded up stash included the original sweet.

It would be helpful to see a calculation with your rates, the installed cost of batteries, cost of the space taken up, losses in the batteries, any cost of maintenance, lifetime of batteries, and cost (or benefit) of disposal.

I like it. I do work that it, and The Narrow Path, are both missing how hard it will be to govern and restrict AI.

I think it's pretty good to keep it in mind that heliocentrism is literally speaking just a change in what coordinate system you use, but it is legitimately a much more convenient coordinate system.

To be clear, I don't really think of myself as libertarian these days, though I guess it'd probably look that way if you just gave me a political alignment quiz.

To answer your question: I'm two years older than my brother, who is two years older than my sister.

I think that is probably not a good reason to be libertarian in my opinion? Could you also share maybe how much older were your than you siblings? If you are not that far apart, you and your siblings came from the same starting line, distributing is not going to happen in real life economically nor socially even if not libertarian (in real life, where we need equity is when the starting line is not the same and is not able to be changed by choice. A more similar analogy might be some kids are born with large ears, and large ears are favored by the society, and the large eared kids always get more candy). If you are ages apart with you being a lot older, it may make some limited sense to for your parents to re-distribute.

Is this useful, as a reader?

if the authors make sure they agree with all the definitions they allow into the glossary, yes. author-written definitions would be even more useful because how things are worded can implicitly convey things like, the underlying intuition, ontology, or related views they may be using wording to rule in or out.

Y'know @Ryan [LW · GW], MATS should try to hire the PIBBSS folks to help with recruiting. IMO they tend to have the strongest participants of the programs on this chart which I'm familiar with (though high variance).
